Environmental Best Practices

Environmental preservation is one of our core values here at Larsen Marine. Several common marine products can be harmful to the environment when used improperly. With this in mind, please adhere to the following guidelines. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in the reduction of facility access. Thank you.

    Painting and Refinishing

    • Be careful not to spill paints and solvents. Keep containers closed at all times. Do not leave paint or solvent containers open during a job. Use a containment tray for open paint cans. Should a spill occur, it must be reported to the yard management at once.
    • Use up remaining paint by spreading it on an old board. Leave the top off of empty paint cans so they can dry before throwing away in the trash.
    • DO NOT dump unused paints and solvents on the ground or in yard trash cans or dumpsters. Contact our Service Department for disposal information and locations.
    • Spray painting is not allowed in the yard without written permission from management. Sand blasting is not permit-ted at any time.

      Surface Preparation

      • Use biodegradable cleansers and teak cleaners.
      • Use tarps to capture all scrapings, grindings, and chips from hull work.
      • Clean tarps daily. Vacuum dust and debris from work surfaces and tarps.
      • Sanding in buildings shall be performed with dust-less or vacuum type equipment only.

        Engines and Bilges

        • Do not discharge bilge water if there is evidence of fuel or oil in it. Use oil absorbent bilge pads to soak up oil and fuel, wring them out in a properly labeled container and reuse.
        • Dispose of used engine oil in a container meant for recycled oil. Never contaminate used oil with other products such as gasoline or solvents.
        • Oil filters must be drained overnight in a containment tray and then disposed of in a trash container.
        • DO NOT dispose of any fuels or used oils in dumpsters or trash cans.
        • Gasoline and diesel fuel must be disposed of in a properly marked drum under supervision of our Service Department. There is a fee for this service.
        • Antifreeze is formulated from different products. Ethylene glycol type antifreeze is a toxic material which must not be spilled on the ground or in the water. Larsen Marine uses special non-toxic antifreeze when winterizing your boat.

          Disposal Locations

          • For disposal locations of toxic materials please contact our Parts or Service Department.
