Best Environmental Practices

Boat owners are to place their environmentally safe refuse in the waste receptacles provided and be responsible for maintaining the areas immediately adjacent to their boat in a clean, safe and litter-free condition.

PAINTING AND REFINISHING

  • Exercise care to avoid spilling paints and solvents. Keep containers closed at all times, including while using on a job. Use a containment tray for open paint cans. Should a spill occur it must be reported to the yard management at once.
  • Use up remaining bits of paint by spreading on an old board. Leave the top off of empty paint cans allowing them to dry completely before disposal in trash cans.
  • Unused paints and solvents can NOT be dumped on the ground or be disposed of in yard trash cans or dumpsters. Contact the yard’s store or parts department for disposal information and locations.
  • Spray painting is NOT allowed in the yard without written permission from management. Sand blasting is NOT permitted at any time.

SURFACE PREPARATION

  • Use biodegradable cleansers and teak cleaners. Paint removal, whether by sanding or chemical removal, must use tarps to capture all scrapings, grindings, and chips from hull work. Clean tarps daily and properly dispose of removed waste materials.
  • All sanding in buildings shall be preformed with dust-less or vacuum type equipment only.
  • Rental Vacs/Sanders are available in our Ship’s Store.

ENGINES AND BILGES

  • Do not discharge bilge water if there is evidence of fuel or oil in it. Use oil absorbent bulge pads to soak up oil and fuel, wring them out in properly labeled containers and reuse.
  • Dispose of used engine oil in containers for recycled oil. Never contaminate used oil with other products such as gasoline, antifreeze or solvents.
  • Oil Filters must be properly drained overnight in a containment tray and then disposed of in a trash container. Leave oil filters in our drain trays. See service department.
  • Do not dispose of any fuels or used oils in the yard’s dumpsters or trash cans.
  • Gasoline and diesel fuel must be disposed of in properly marked drums under supervision of the yard’s service department. There is a fee for this service.
  • Antifreeze is formulated in various ways using different products. Ethylene glycol type antifreeze is a toxic material, which must not be spilled on the ground or in the water. Larsen Marine uses special non-toxic antifreeze when winterizing your boat.  Boat owners winterizing their own boats must comply with EPA regulations and use only EPA-approved antifreeze.
  • For disposal locations of Hazardous materials please contact our parts or service department.
